incidental Matt

Matt is an experienced Brass musician playing trombone and euphonium with expertise across all musical genres.

In his early career Matt spent over 16 years in the Scots Guards Band.  He was fortunate to take part in all of the State Ceremonial parades including The Queens Birthday Parade (Trooping the Colour), the Cenotaph and the Festival of Remembrance. The band was also part of the Queens Mothers Procession to her laying in state. The band travelled the world extensively and had the honour of taking part in the Handover of Hong Kong in 1997.

Matt also played in the Scots Guards brass quintet and as lead trombone in the Household (Guards) Division big band. On the formation of the Army Big Band he joined as the lead trombonist.
Now he regularly plays with Military bands, brass groups of all sizes, symphony orchestras and Jazz/Big bands. Matt has worked with The Glenn Miller UK Orchestra, The Joe Loss Orchestra and as a pit musician on touring shows such as Guys and Dolls and Fiddler on the Roof in the West End.

Matt has been influenced by many players such as Christian Lindberg (classical), Joe Alessi (classical), J J Johnson (jazz), Frank Rosolino (jazz) from Sweden and the USA and by Mark Nightingale (jazz), Gordon Campbell (jazz), Richard Edwards (jazz/classical) and Andy Flaxman (jazz/classical). All of these, and many more, have helped to shape his musical understanding and playing. Matt continues to study with top quality players and this helped him achieve his MA (Performance) and his LTCL (Recital).

“I have worked with Matt for many years, performing in big bands, orchestras and musical theatre bands. I have also worked with him in educational settings, providing music workshops and instrumental teaching to students of all ages and abilities. Matt is without doubt a wonderful musician, performer and educator, and is an extremely reliable professional.

In my 10 years in the West End, Matt is one of my first calls as a deputy as there is always a guarantee that by hiring Matt the job will be covered with extreme professionalism and at an extremely high standard.”
