Testimonials

From Rob Whiffin, ex Principal Director of Music Royal Air Force and presently the conducting professor at the Royal Military School of Music Kneller Hall.

“Matt Quick is a musician of the highest quality. He is an excellent trombone player who can be relied upon to perform with complete mastery of a variety of styles from jazz to orchestral. In addition to his technical expertise he is also an accurate reader with the ability to assimilate music with the speed and accuracy required of a professional musician. He can be thoroughly recommended to any prospective employer.”

From Ed Keeley (ex Director of Music Honourable Artillery Band)

“I have personally known Matt for six years; he was an integral member of an ensemble that I directed. He is an outstanding trombone player that is as equally at home in any genre of music; classical to jazz, big band to funk. Although an experienced and accomplished reader, he can comfortably and creatively improvise and ad lib., and can produce some innovative and fun breaks. He has a great sound that he can adapt to all ensembles, and a timbre that projects easily, contrastingly, he also has the foresight and musical awareness to blend and perform within the section. Matt is, by nature, organized and well disciplined, and is meticulous in his preparations and approach to rehearsals or engagements.

I have not know him in a teaching environment, but I am sure that he has patience, the expertise, and wherewithal to effectively communicate his knowledge and experience to any level of proficiency, to any age and any gender.

I would unreservedly recommend Matt as a great guy and a great musician.”

From Dave Milgate ( Present Director of Music Honourable Artillery Band)

“… I have known Matt Quick for 20 years – not only is he a man of impeccable character he is also a musician with impeccable talent. Very adaptable and able to perform various styles, he is equally at home playing Mahler or improvising in a jazz combo. Not only is he the consummate professional as an instrumentalist his abilities as a performer are more than matched by his expertise as a teacher. I would recommend him as a coach to any player of any standard who wants to improve to the next step.”

From David Sear (Trombone Student at Birmingham Conservatoire)

“I had trombone lessons with Matt for 7 years before going to university.  They were thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile – giving me a great insight to the trombone, and music in general. I have a lot to thank Matt for, as he helped me achieve a distinction in my grade 8 and a place at Birmingham Conservatoire.”

From Jo Sear

“Matt taught our son David for eight years (year 6 – 13), classical and jazz trombone – and David is now half way through a Jazz Trombone degree at Birmingham Conservatoire. Whilst under Matt’s tuition David progressed from grade 3 to gain his grade 8 with distinction.
Matt is a great musician, disciplined and organised, and inspires his pupils to achieve in every aspect of their life!”

From Piera Onako (ex student now studying at Birmingham Conservatoire)

“I had trumpet lessons with Matt for about 6 years, at the end of which I received my grade 8 with merit. I found my lessons to be challenging and productive, and always enjoyable. Matt is strongly involved in the technical aspect of playing, and within a couple of weeks he was able to correct my embouchure problem. I am now 3 years into music college; thanks Matt!”

incidental EuphFrom Oskar Blake (Present Student)

“Matt has been my teacher for almost 10 years now, he wasn’t my original teacher but I am glad that he became my teacher in the end. He has seen me through all of my 5 grade exams and throughout this time has always made sure that I am playing to the best I can be through always pushing me forward, to strive to improve and make sure that every aspect of my playing is the top of what I can do and then push me further.
His teaching style is simple, if you put in the effort then he will give you all of that back and more whilst also making sure that the lessons are also made enjoyable. In any lessons if you slip on a piece or scale, he is the type of teacher that will pick up on that immediately and will focus on it until it is correct. This is a one of many qualities that make Matt such a great teacher along with resilience and such a great array of knowledge that he can pass on.
In the many years I have none Matt I have never once left a lesson without improving in one aspect of what we have done which has meant that now I am able to play in the Luton Youth Jazz Orchestra which is now one of 5 bands in the UK chosen to take part in The Primary Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Without his teaching and guidance I can safely say that I wouldn’t be where I am today and playing at the ability that I can. It is because of him I can play in the in the place that every musician dreams of playing in and I can never thank him enough for the time he has invested in me.
I would recommend Matt to any brass student, he will never give up on you as long as you don’t give up on him and he will definitely help any young brass player reach the best they can.”

From Alison Blake (parent)

“We have known Matt quick for nearly 10 years as a Brass teacher to both of our children, from the age of 7. In that time we have found Matt to be very knowledgeable on what type of brass instruments would suit a child, and suggest changes as they grow.
Matt is very approachable and willing to assist any parent or child with any concerns or difficulties they may be experiencing, and deals with them in a very professional and relaxed manner.
Matt is excellent for 1 to 1 tuition as well as group teaching. He will stretch his pupils so that playing music is both and enjoyable as well as challenging for any student he teaches to ensure they reach their potential, form beginners to advanced stages, taking them through their practical and theory exams with ease and confidence. He has also organised visits and tuition for children from other musical genres like Jazz, Concerts Bands and Military Music, giving his pupils an insight into being a professional musician.
I would highly recommend Matt as Brass teacher to any parent whose child is looking to play a brass instrument, you couldn’t ask for a better inspirational teacher for your child.”

From Stephen Beaven (Head of Luton Music Service 1997-2009)

“I have known Matt Quick for more than 30 years; initially, as a student of the Dunstable Music School, of which I was director, and thereafter as a colleague and employee of the Luton Music Service when I was its head before my retirement in 2009.

I know him to be a consummate musician with a wide knowledge of ‘classical music’ and jazz and a very accomplished trombonist: he also has a sound knowledge of all the brass instruments, percussion, timpani and drum kit.

Matt is very disciplined and responsible in his approach to playing and he also shows these characteristics in his teaching. He has high expectations of his pupils, setting them challenging targets and giving them the guidance and support they need to achieve them.

Matt is diligent and conscientious.”
